Leirvik

posted by admin in , , Uncategorized

Leirvik is the centre of the municipality of Stord in Hordaland, Norway. Leirvik is also the regional centre of Sunnhordland, and has many public services and offices such as the regional court and the Sunnhordland Folkemuseum.

Leirvik is also a shopping centre in the region of Sunnhordland with many restaurants, and a very popular harbour in the summer. The town does not offer a great deal in terms of shops or nightlife.

Confusingly, when the municipality of Stord declared township, they decided to name the town Stord. This was to ensure that Leirvik and its surrounding areas were large and populous enough to qualify for Norwegian city status. Even though this is the official name, the public acceptance of this is minimal, so the name of the urban community remains Leirvik.

People in Stord actually refer to Leirvik by the name ‘Vikjo’ rather than Leirvik.
The name Leirvik translates into ‘clay bay’. With the word ‘Leire’ meaning clay and ‘vik’ meaning bay. The name naturally comes from the high concentration of clay in the ground.
