Saint Marys Hospital is one of two hospitals in Rochester, Minnesota operated by the Mayo Clinic. It was founded in 1889 by a local Franciscan religious community, the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota, led by Mother Alfred Moes, in partnership with Doctors William W., William J., and Charles H. Mayo.

Today it is a large hospital campus with 1,157 licensed beds and 58 operating rooms, making it the largest privately operated hospital in the nation. In 2004, there were an average of 116 admissions per day as well as 82 surgical cases. The buildings comprising it are named after Franciscan sisters who were the hospital’s administrators: Mother Alfred, Joseph, Domitilla, Mary Brigh, and Generose, as well as the Francis Building, so named to commemorate the service of the Franciscan sisters over the years. The hospital includes the 85-bed Mayo Eugenio Litta Children’s Hospital. The Mayo Clinic Psychiatry and Psychology Treatment Center in the Generose Building is also part of the campus. St. Marys Hospital campus includes the nation’s largest intensive care unit which includes 200 ICU beds and 200 “step-down” ICU beds.

Originally, the name was spelled Saint Mary’s Hospital, as can be seen in stone above the old front entrance, but in recent years the apostrophe is usually omitted.
